Kaanis, the Doglord
This minor halfling deity is the god of friendship, honor and loyalty. Kaanis (kahn-iss) is also the patrol saint of kennels and (and in his auspice as Doglord) is said to have given the halflings the first riding dogs. Kaanis is often invoked by animal handlers, healers and trainers, even those who associate with other types of animals besides canines.

Kaanis appears in one of two forms. The first is that of a well-fed but rugged halfling man with gray hair and black eyes. He wears a simple cloak of dark gray wool and dark clothing. As Doglord, Kaanis presents himself as a large, gray-furred mastiff with piercing black eyes and a serious demeanor (children claim to see Kaanis more often than adults, and many stories have been told of lost halfling children being led home by the ghostly form of a large gray dog).

Just as I look after you, you must look after them.
Guard them while they sleep. Comfort them when they grieve.
Protect their children as I have protected yours.
Do not fail, do not stray...keep them always in mind.

There are no formal clerics of this god. Most followers of Kaanis adopt him in time of need, honoring him with small silver bowls of water they put out at sundown. Animal handlers, healers and trainers who follow this god will oftimes welcome a newly-born pup in the Doglord's name. Halfling soldiers (and even a few human rangers and dog-handlers) will sometimes wear Kaanis' holy symbol around their neck to remind them that they too have a duty to watch and protect their companions.
