Beastfolk (template)
Beastfolk dwell on the Isle of Gnar, a remote island dotted with ancient ruins of unknown origin. The Beastfolk of Gnar themselves are of unknown origin. Some who have encountered the beastfolk hypothesize that the lizardmen are of similar origin. Beastfolk speak a gutteral dialect of the common tongue, as well as the language of their own kind.

Beastfolk appear to be humanoid man-animal hybrids. The creatures are fairly intelligent, but fierce and wild. They are all bipedal and have fully-functional arms and hands (even the avian beastfolk). The Beastfolk of Gnar are limited to stone and bronze-age tools and weaponry. They hunt animals for food, or live off of plants. Only mammalian and avian beastfolk are known to exist.

Creating Beastfolk
"Beastfolk" is a template that can be added to animals of a mammalian or avian nature (there are no beastfolk reptiles, sharks, insects, etc). The creature's type is changed to humanoid (type of animal) and its intelligence attribute is raised by 3d4.

A beastfolk uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here:

Speed: as noted. The rare avian and chiropteran beastfolk lack fully-functional wings and may only glide for short distances.
Special Attacks: A beastfolk retains all the special attacks of the base creature.
Special Qualities: Once per day, a beastfolk may use any one druidic orison (level 0 spells). Beastfolk may also speak with normal animals of their own kind (an extraordinary ability that works like the 2nd level druidic spell "Speak with Animals"). All beastfolk also possess the Scent ability.
Organization: Beastfolk gather together in small bands or live solitary lives. They usually don't group within a species but beastfolk of similar stock sometimes live together.
Alignment: Usually neutral.
Advancement: By character class. A male beastfolk's favored character class is ranger. A female beastfolk's favored character class is druid. A common prestige class for beastfolk is that of Tribal Protector (found in Sword & Fist).
